Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Liver cirrhosis can cause portal hypertension gastropathy, esophageal varices and liver-derived peptic ulcer. Liver-derived peptic is the clinicopathological syndrome caused by liver cirrhosis with gastrointestinal bleeding symptom.

And esophageal and gastric variceal bleeding (EGVB) is the common symptom of liver cirrhosis. Large bleeding volume, rapid condition change, high mortality, causing hemorrhagic shock and hepatic encephalopathy are all traits of EGVB.

Liver cirrhosis patients in late stage can experience gastrointestinal bleeding which is caused by liver dysfunction. Besides, impaired liver function and disturbances of blood coagulation can result in gastrointestinal bleeding as well.

In late stage, patients with liver cirrhosis show many symptoms among which upper gastrointestinal bleeding is the most common and fatal one. Except for medication treatment, liver cirrhosis patients should also pay attention to the following points in daily life to prevent upper gastrointestinal bleeding:

1. Stop drinking. Alcohol should be absolutely forbidden in late stage of liver cirrhosis no matter whether the patients show the symptom of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Moreover, stomach stimulant medications should also be avoided.

2. If liver cirrhosis patients have had symptom of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, they should eat soft food in case food rips venous plexus and causes bleeding. Do not eat fried food, meat and fish with bone spur. Pungent condiments, such as hot pepper, should also be forbidden.

3. Stool unimpeded is very important. Patients should avoid coughing heavy, because it can increase abdominal pressure and cause vascular rupture.

4. Keep a good mood is helpful for liver cirrhosis treatment. According to modern medical research, mood is closely related to immunity system. Optimistic and positive treatment attitude can make treatment far more effective.

5. Balance work and rest. Patients with liver cirrhosis should avoid overwork, heavy manual work and staying up late.

Most patients have no obvious symptoms or discomfort before gastrointestinal bleeding. Some have the feeling of satiety before haematemesis. Once have symptoms of haematemesis, patients should be sent to hospital as soon as possible. Moreover, patients should lie on the back without pillow and hot food and food contain protein must be forbidden.
